These are some of our basic guidelines for parents and volunteers involved in Children's Ministries at South Abbotsford Church: (These are related to the 0-3 years of age group.)
- Check In Procedure - Parents are asked to complete a registration form for each child and update them as necessary. As you drop off your child, please sign them in on the sheet provided and make a note of any special concerns or needs. A number tag must be attached to the child’s back and the corresponding number must be given to the parent. All diaper bags (and bottles, sippy cups, etc.) left for the children, must also be appropriately labeled (ID pins for the bags will be available for those who need them). A volunteer should be at the counter to assist with this procedure and help the child settle in.
- Leaving Your Child - Once you have registered your child, please leave him/her with the volunteers and proceed to the worship session. Your child may cry, indicating a healthy preference for parents, but he/she will soon settle down. Your child’s crying will become less apparent with regular attendance. If your child experiences unusual anxiety or has a special need, your number will flash on the Visual Pager at the front right hand side of the sanctuary. If you miss this, an usher will find and summon you. After you have tended to your child’s need, you are welcome to return to the sanctuary. For some children, having too many adults around causes anxiety.
- Child Pick Up Procedure - After the service, please pick up your child as soon as possible. For security reasons, only the PARENT with the correct number tag may pick up their child. Volunteers will make sure both tags are returned to the tag board.
- Behavior Expectations - Nursery staff will encourage fair and safe play among the children. Parents will be asked to remove children who display excessive aggressive behavior. Aggressive behavior is defined as harm to another child or person.
- Volunteer Qualifications - Volunteers should see this as a ministry opportunity. It is not a chance to visit, or to get out of the service, but a chance to influence a young life as well as to allow parents to worship without distraction. Full attention should take note of new families and make them feel welcome and secure. For those reasons, we would like volunteers to be committed Christians. There will be an application form to fill out as well as a police check, which is required for volunteers 18 years of age or older. Parents who regularly bring their child(ren) to the nursery will be placed on the schedule to take their turns as volunteers.
